The Gun and the Olive Branch: The Roots of Violence in the Middle East (Nation Books)
More than a decade before Israel's New Historians revolutionized the study of Israeli history, English journalist David Hirst wrote The Gun and the Olive Branch, a classic, myth-breaking general history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Hirst, former Middle East correspondent of the Guardian, traces the origins of the terrible conflict back to the 1880s to show how Arab violence, although often cruel and fanatical, is a response to the challenge of repeated aggression. The Gun and the Olive Branch is an absorbing, potentially controversial, history of the Middle Eastern conflict that is indispensable to anyone with an interest in world politics and by partisans of both sides. This classic and controversial account of the origins of the Middle East conflict returns to print updated with a lengthy introduction that reflects on the course of recent Middle Eastern history—especially the abortive Israeli-Palestinian peace process and 9/11.
olive branch and ivy wreath
i've heard that neighbors are influced by what you do with the outside of your house. meaning it can change their moods, make them happy or mad depending on what you do. that is why christmas lights are so festive on a dark winter's night. i woke up with an idea (one of the benefits of hot flashes is that i use that time to meditate and come up with plans) that i should do a different wreath every month or so with what is out there in nature. a friend told me once to be careful with wreaths and door hangings because you dont want to invite something harmful into your life. i knew when i woke up that i wanted to put olive branches on this season's wreath and i set out with my trusty pruners and then figured i would do some research on what i found.
Olive branches: healing, longevity, protection and peace
that one i knew, the peace part and that is what i wanted to invite into our home and for people passing by to think of first, olive branch=peace. but it also invokes protection, and healing.
Grapevine: celebration, fertility, and abundance
i like to make my wreaths with the grapevine cuttings that are littered all over the vineyards during pruning season, because they make strong wreaths without any wires. grapevines are the lifeblood of this region and thus represent heartily abundance and fecundity.
Ivy: protection, healing, good luck, Guards against negativity and disaster
as i was walking home with my garlands (i stopped and fed the resort's goats some clippings) i was struck by some pretty ivy growing despite it being -5 all week long. it doesnt give up and provides the animals with some greens all winter long. it protects against catastrophes, it's a survivor and brides wear it for good luck.
the ivy and grapevines intertwined together with olive branches of peace, remind me of the spiral movement of the heavens and the way this is reflected on the earth binding things together. how we are all bound together.
