Sleep Number

Sleep Number

I don't usually fly Frontier, but I've got to say that the trip to San Diego was a treat. The flight wasn't too crowded, I got the seat I wanted, and the flight attendants were very friendly. If it wasn't for my massive points investment at United, I'd consider using Frontier more often in the future. Another out of the norm for me was in staying at the Radisson in San Diego.

I generally stay at Starwood brands (Westin, Sheraton). The entire San Diego area was packed however, so I landed wherever I could get a bed for the price that I'd generally pay at the Westin. Turns out that at a Radisson that same amount of money gets you one heck of a lot more. For starters my room is a "townhome" that's two stories. There's internet drops all over the room and it's also covered by wireless (though there's a distinct lack of power outlets). There's also a Sleep Number bed - what we use at home.

You can't truly appreciate a Sleep Number bed in one night, but let's just say that we love ours and look forward adding one for Paige when she gets older.

All the extra amenities aside, you can also tell where they squeeze money. The staff here is ... uh ... less than friendly at best.

At a Westin my luggage would be pulled from the cab, my door open and a welcome greeting (complete with my name pulled from my baggage tags) would be offerred. Here I got a sloppily dressed guy smoking a cigarette who gave me a nod.

The guy who was running the bar last night also ran the two restaurants, which meant that when I spilled my drink, I had to wait 30 minutes for him to re-appear and get a towel (I actually went behind the counter myself in place of waiting and nobody was around to say anything about it). By comparison, the restaurants at most Westin's are often one of the city's places to be seen and require reservations after 10 PM.

At a Westin you often have top-of-the-line exercise equipment. Treadmills with their own televisions with DirectTV and personal use headsets. Sensors that tell you everything about your body at the touch of a finger. Rows of stationary bikes, eliptical trainers, weight sets, etc. are the norm, and I'm almost sure they pay good looking people just to workout. Here the exercise facility is straight out of 1980, and I was actually startled when another person showed up.

Regardless, it's been an interesting experience.
